If a WhatsApp link does not open as expected, start with the phone number and complete address. A mistyped digit, repeated country code or truncated link can change the result. Rebuilding the link is often easier than editing parts of it by hand.
Use the WhatsApp link generator to prepare a fresh version. The tool builds the address; you still need to check its destination.
1. Check the international phone number
A wa.me address uses the complete international phone number. Check the country code and the remaining digits against the number registered with WhatsApp. If the generator provides a separate country-code field, do not repeat that code in the phone field.
The final address uses digits without a plus sign, brackets or dashes. Do not add or remove a digit just to match an example. Confirm the actual number with the account holder.
2. Copy the entire address
A partial link may lose the phone number or message. Generate it again, use the copy button and paste it into a note first. Check that both the beginning and end are present.
Spaces and accented characters in a prefilled message are encoded in the address. That is expected. Change the original message in the generator instead of editing the encoded sections manually.
3. Distinguish the number from the device
If WhatsApp says the number is invalid, check the details with the contact owner. If the address opens a browser but does not continue to the app, review the choices displayed on screen and whether the app is available on that device.
On a computer, the route may involve WhatsApp Web or an installed app. Different behavior on a phone and computer does not, by itself, prove the address was built incorrectly.
4. Test without sending a message
- Use a number you control or have permission to publish.
- Open the generated link.
- Check the contact and message shown.
- Close the test without pressing send.
- Check the link again in the place where you intend to share it.
A prefilled message only fills the opening text field. It does not send itself, confirm service or create automatic replies.
Before adding the link to a profile
