Tarot for beginners: start with one card

Get to know the deck, choose an open question and turn a reading into a moment of reflection without memorizing every meaning.

What you are practising

A tarot reading uses symbols to explore a situation from different angles. Our approach is reflective: a card cannot establish what another person feels or guarantee future events. You remain responsible for your decisions. You can be curious without treating an app as an authority or a combination as an instruction.

Set aside a few minutes and choose a small topic. “What could I notice about my routine?” offers more room for reflection than asking when an event will happen. You do not need to tell a website your private situation to try this exercise.

Understand the 78 cards

A traditional deck contains 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. Major cards introduce broad themes such as change, initiative and balance. The minors combine four suits with everyday situations: Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles. Each suit has ten numbered cards and four court cards.

Associations vary between traditions and decks. Treat a meaning as a starting point rather than a definitive description of your life. The InfosPixel tool uses our own editorial interpretations and upright cards only, without reversed readings.

Try your first reading

  1. Choose an open question about something you can influence.
  2. Select “Draw a card” and take your time reading.
  3. Consider the theme, reflection question and suggested action.
  4. Write one sentence about what felt relevant and one about what did not fit.

For “How could I organize today?”, a theme of balance might suggest choosing one priority and allowing breaks. This does not mean the deck knows your schedule. You are connecting a symbol with your experience.

Three questions to explore

  • Which habit deserves attention today?
  • What could I simplify in this situation?
  • What small step is within my reach?

If an interpretation feels vague, replace an abstract word with a concrete example. Instead of “I need clarity”, write “I will spend ten minutes listing my questions”. You are free to disagree with the card and stop without drawing again.

Avoid chasing a preferred answer

Repeating a question until a pleasing card appears can make the exercise confusing. Prefer one draw and one record. If an image is uncomfortable, stop. Cards such as Death and the Tower are treated here as symbols of endings and reassessment, never predictions of death or disaster.

Do not base health, financial or safety decisions on a reading. Seek appropriate information and support for those situations. Tarot does not replace professionals or direct conversations with the people involved.

Keep a simple journal

Record the date, question, card and one small action. At the end of the day, revisit your actual experience. The aim is not to count correct predictions but to notice whether the question helped you think. Continue with our journaling guide and one-card tool. No deck purchase or personal information is required to begin.
